yacht after it capsized in san francisco bay and pieces of the boat broke off. video here from news chopper 2 shows crews scrambling to recover the vessel after the tide caused a broken boat drift three miles outside the golden gate bridge. told us there were 12 people on board when the boat skipped about 3:00 this afternoon and that they all got off unharmed. officials tell us the crew men were just out. >> this is the biggest there is all year so when it hits tide we actually see waves. we know that. what we understand happened is that the two hulls dug into the water and the boat just full. >>> the semi-two foot carbon fiber vessel is one of two identical ones. it is valued at about $8 million. at this hour the recovery effort continues outside the golden gate. >>> a search for a missing plane ended today. the pilot was the only person on board. he was killed. we're live right near the airport where the plane had taken off early yesterday morning. john. >> gasia, san mateo county sheriff's office is just wrapping up the word here tonight as the coroner just removed the remains fr

into the ocean are now back onshore. the $10million vessel flipped yesterday near the san francisco yacht club. cbs 5 reporter cate caugiran is at the headquarters of team oracle, which owns the boat. >> reporter: this is the first time a major incident has happened with these new longer 72-foot catamarans. but we're told the most important thing is that nobody was hurt in this incident. crews worked into the early- morning hours to bring back what was left of that $10 million boat and yesterday sailors on the america's cup boat were doing training exercises and team leaders say they knew something was wrong when the back of the boat started to lift up and say winds were not working in their favor. it was blowing in one direction and the current in the opposite. and that's when the boat went in along with some of the 13 crewmembers. this? and how? >> if you are making reference to the challenges facing the san francisco community college at this time, i think that there are going to be some very painful and although, necessary, redirection of focus. we have been providing a lot of classes, non-credit classes and classes that don't need to further training for new employment. or for the opportunity to pursue a 4-year degree. and given that, upwards of 40 percent of all new jobs created in the next 20 years are going to require a bachelor's degree and only about 32 percent of californians will have one. we are going to have to refocus, particularly at community college level again, with limited resources to assist those who are moving from one career to another. mid career as a result of the changing economy so that they can get new skills that they will need and for younger people who want to get into the job market to help them to be able to get on a path that will get them that bachelor's degree. >> i agree with the senator that the retraining is a important aspect of the educational system here. i think city

will tell you more. right now frustrating traffic closures and delays this weekend in san francisco thanks to numerous events from fleet week to america's cup prelims. >> amy hollyfield is live along the embarcadero with a look ahead. one busy spot. >> reporter: it is going to be interesting. this is going to be a tough spot because the crowds will be thick. there's a nice wide sidewalk here but they expect this to be packed with pedestrians. so, where to put the bicyclists? city officials are going to try a novel idea. northbound lane on the embarcadero closed down, just for bicyclists. they think it is good because they want to keep them often sidewalk away from the pedestrians. there are -- there are signs around the embarcadero flashing now warning people of how crowded it is going to be. the plan for the bicyclists has not been widely publicized this is a new idea. they are going to shutdown a lane between bay and washington starting tomorrow. really, the message is, just don't even try to drive a car down here on the embarcadero this weekend. the elite flight team will take to the sk

:04. hundreds gathered under the city hall rotunda in san francisco last night to remember ambassador chris stevens. ♪ [ music ] stevens was killed last month in an attack on the u.s. consulate in benghazi, libya. among those at yesterday's memorial service were mayor ed lee and senator dianne feinstein. the libyan ambassador to the united states expressed his government's regret. >> we're very sorry. you send us one of your best diplomats but unfortunate will not be able to protect him. >> he said stevens was a good diplomat because he was interested in the lives of the libyan people. during the service has younger sister anne said his optimism inspired her to learn about the middle east. chris stevens of course a graduate of cal and grew up in piedmont and a good guy. i went to college with him. >> you were there at the service. >> i was there. i was really touched. his two sisters are doctors, his brother is a very good attorney. they both spoke. and a lot of laughter, george schultz former secretary of state, 92, got up there and just brought it all home. he was amazing. and the ambas
a decision could be made today, should be made today, this afternoon at 2:00. members of the san francisco board of supervisors have been going over findings of the ethics commission since september. the commission found sheriff mirkarimi guilty of official misconduct that was after he pleaded guilty to one count of false imprisonment, other charges were dropped after the fight with his wife. at the time, lopez let a neighbor videotape a bruise on her arm but has said she stands by her husband and his suspension is a political witch hadn't. mayor lee asked mirkarimi to resign in the -- resign he refused so the mayor did suspend him and that brings us to today. here's now today's hearing is going to work. the ethics commission will give an overview. the mayor and the sheriff will each have 20 minutes to make a presentation mayor gets a rebuttal. finally public comment which could be unlimited supervisors have the option of cutting it off after 30 minutes. mirkarimi has supporters. yesterday, we saw his detractors and anti-domestic violence group, held a rally calling for the sheriff to be r
in san francisco. it started at the back of the building at the bay view hunters point building. a rear bedroom was damaged. everyone got out safely and they kept the flames from spreading to adjacent homes. it's been more than 24 hours since a pilot and his plan went missing after taking off from half-moon bay. the single engine plane left around 6 in the morning yesterday. the pilot heading down to tucson arizona but never made it. the plane is similar to this one here with a tail number n72ah. it is registered to man bay the name of of andrew haden out of florida. his wife reported him missing after the plane didn't make a fuel stop in apple valley. >>> four separate shootings in oakland in one afternoon and evening. six people are injured. the most serious incident happened just before 10 last night in east oakland. one victim has critical injuries. earlier two other people were shot in east oakland. in addition one person was wounded near lake merritt and they are all in stable condition. >>> a court appointed monitor has harsh words saying department leaders are backsliding on ref

of their homes last night in san francisco. crews evacuated a whole block around 7:30 on powell street between green and vallejo in north beach. the police responded to a call and apparent suicide. emergency responders smelled chemicals when they got there. 15 people inside the build handwriting to be evacuated and firefighters were in that building for over three hours trying to disburse the mystery chemical to make it safe for people to return and they were able to do so in the mild of the night. >>> police are -- in the middle of the night. >>> police are investigating a murder last night. the officers responded to a welfare check on mission and fifth street after 11:00 and found a man in his 30s in the car. he was shot and died at the scene. so far, police have not announce good arrests in that case. >>> the san mateo bridge, watch out. it's closed for seismic retrofitting and repairing this weekend. we have a live shot of the bridge where the work began friday night and that is going around the clock. in recent years, it's become standard operating procedures to close the area bridges on

on two lines from the east bay into san francisco. that would be those lines. this was because of a maintenance vehicle blocking tracks early this morning south of the mcarthur station. now that vehicle has been cleared out of the way but trains were backed up. everything started about 4:30 this morning when that vehicle that rides actually on the bart tracks itself came off the tracks and the obviously the bart trains going through that area had to slow down. the delays were frustrating for bart riders. >> i am supposed to catch an amtrak to sacramento, so if i miss that train it is an hour and a half wait so i might not go to sacramento today. >> it goes with the territory, bart mainly is clean, safe, economical way to get to work, you just have to understand sometimes there will be mechanical error, sometimes you know even a human failure once in a while. it goes with the territory. >> bart passengers seem to by pretty understanding this morning. workers had to work throughout the early morning to clear up this problem and bring in a separate vehicle to remove the stalled wo

that their car crashed into and the car itself are still on scene. we have video from earlier. san francisco police say this all began at around 2:00 this morning just a few blocks from here at ellis and laguna. that's when officers say they were trying to pull over a car for a broken license plate light. and that is when the suspect's car tried to get away. not only that, they believe that the suspect or suspects fired shots on officers. as they tried to catch up to this car at eddy and franklin there was a crash with a cab. after that the suspects tried to run away. police arrested the passenger of the car but one man is still on the loose. they believe it is the driver of the car. it's still an active scene, officers gathering evidence from the taxi and the car. right now they have the passenger in custody. they want to gather more information as time progresses at this time. they set up a perimeter to look for the suspect but said it's such a wide area. they did take that down. these suspects are not from san francisco but other than that we only know that they are two males and we are s

is off. it's friday october 19th. new this morning someone shot at police in san francisco. it all started with what appeared to be a routine traffic stop. we are live with the chain of events that led to the shooting. >> reporter: a man opened fire on san francisco police officers this morning after officers tried to pull over the car he was in. after the shooting that car sped away. no officers hit by the way and the car sped away, made its way to this intersection, blew through this red light and slammed into a taxi cab. this was a white cadillac that police were after. it was going close to 50 miles an hour. the cab driver who was hit had minor injuries. after the crash the two inside that car then bailed out of the car and ran away. police moved in, they were able to arrest the passenger but this morning the driver is still on the loose. everything started around 2:00 when officers tried to make that traffic stop for a light that was out on the license plate of the car. seemingly minor infraction but didn't turn out to be a simple traffic stop. a sergeant we talked to said he
mirkarimi will get back to work as san francisco's sheriff that is after a late night vote by supervisors that ended a month long legal ordeal. tara moriarty joins us now from outside city hall with a break down of the vote and reaction from all sides. tara. >> reporter: mayor ed lee needed nine of the 11 supervisors in order to out mirkarimi but only seven voted to do so. the fact that john airflows and compo may not have come as a surprise but jane kim and christina that came as a shocker to many. >> given that motion required nine votes in order to pass the motion does not approve. the charges are not sustained.
